Hi, my name is Moya Brown. My husband, Mark, and I are the owners of:
Before
the birth of our son, Jacob, we received a diaper cake as a baby
shower gift from one of our closest friends. Thanks Jen! It was the
first time we had ever seen one. We were really impressed with how
adorable the cake was and how many little baby items it came with.
It was not until after Jacob was born that we truly realized just how thoughtful of a gift diaper cakes really are. We carefully took it apart, studying each item and how the cake was put together. It was so obvious that a lot of work and planning went into this awesome gift! In the weeks following Jacob’s birth, we used every single item on the cake, several of which we had not thought to purchase yet!
A few months later, one of our friends announced that she and her husband were expecting. I asked Mark about the idea of making a diaper cake for them. He said it was a great idea, but we needed to figure our how much all of the "ingredients" cost, so we knew how big of a cake we could make and still not bust our own budget.
So we started pricing them out and remembering how the diaper cake we received was made. Then we bought all of the ingredients and though trial and error (more error at first, it seemed ), we made our first cake! The shower date arrived and you should have seen my friends’ expressions when they saw our first cake! They were delighted and because of their reactions, so were we.
At that shower, some friends asked how I made the cake and if we would make one for another shower coming up. Well, this led to that, and pretty soon we had our own business making diaper cakes for friends and their referrals.
As
we just mentioned,
our first diaper cake was given to some close friends, so admittedly, we went
overboard stuffing it full of diapers and great little necessities
that we knew they
would need! After we started selling our diaper cakes as a
business, we did not change this idea of over-delivering!
After studying how others make their diaper cakes, we know there are lots of ways to cut corners to make more money. You can buy cheaper diapers, cheaper ingredients, make the cakes hollow inside to reduce shipping weight, and on and on.
We refuse to do any of this because our recipe has never let us down! We have always, and I do mean always, made those that received OUR cakes very happy and we want to keep it that way.
Now we are dabbling with all sorts of ideas to expand the diaper cake business into other baby-related gift and service areas. But as we grow, you can rest assured that we will always remember that true success in any business comes when you exceed your customers' expectations, and this will be the foundation of anything we do!
